THE Gawler Golf Club will now be officially known as the Sandy Creek Golf Club after holding a family fun day on Sunday to mark the momentous occasion.
Around 400 people were present at the course for the event, which included some great golfing, an array of entertainment including music, wine-tasting and putting contests, but, more importantly, celebrated the launch of the club’s new title.
Club manager David Rice said the idea of a name change had “been on the radar for some time” and hopes it will help provide better clarity regarding the location of the course, and tap in to a new demographic of players.
“Coming from the wine industry, before I started up at the club, I realised the strength of the Barossa brand and also noticed there was quite a bit of confusion about our location,” Mr Rice said.
“So we, really, made it a matter of priority to get the change through in order to just bring a bit more clarity around our location, and also really capitalise on the Barossa brand and the Barossa tourist destination.”
Established in 1904, the club was one of the eight founding members of the South Australian Golf Union – just last year it launched a new logo and branding, installed solar panels and redeveloped its clubhouse entry and driving range area.
Now with nearly 300 members, Mr Rice hopes the club’s new direction, beginning with the change in title and coupled with its junior clinics, MyGolf program, and new twilight competition, will see a steady boost in those numbers.
“We’re heading in a direction where we’re trying to make the game more accessible for people…and trying to get more families involved, and really just open up the game of golf, and our club, to a wider audience,” Mr Rice said.
“I think there’s the perception around our club that we’re private, and we really want to break down that boundary and let people know that anyone’s welcome here, and anyone can enjoy the game of golf.”
